CUBA 2008: Birds of Bermejas, Zapata Peninsula.

Bermejas March 2008.

Cuban Tody, March 2008.

Bermejas is simply a wonderful place to see Cuban birds and I believe it has more endemic bird species than any other place on the island. We spent a full afternoon there just soaking up some of the birds this year including this stunning Cuban Tody (above).

Plenty of Cuban Trogons (top) in the dry forest here too whilst Cuban Pewees make themsevles known by their chracteristic song.

Ovenbird, Bermejas March 2008.

Magnolia Warbler, American Redstart, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler and Prairie Warbler were all seen in the reserve while the forest floor was frequented by Grey-headed Quail-Doves, Key West Quail Dove (above) and migrant Ovenbirds.

Cuban Pygmy-Owl, Bermajas March 2008.

Local guide knowledge is invaluable here too as they know the whereabouts of Bare-legged Owl (above) and Cuban Pygmy-Owls are numerous on the reserve.
