CUBA 2008: First impressions.

Loggerhead Kingbird.

Once everyone arrived in Havana we headed west out to Soroa (just over an hour from the airport) seeing a couple of Barn Owls on the way. A brief search for Stygian Owl before bed proved fruitless and we settled in for the night after a long day travelling. Next morning we searched the forested foothills in beautiful suunny weather and picked up a host of Cuban birds including Cuban Tody, Fernandina's Flicker, Cuban Vireo, Cuban Green Woodpecker, Cuban Trogon and best of all a couple of Cuban Grassquits. Caribbean birds included Western Spindalis, Loggerhead Kingbird, West Indian Woodpecker and Great Lizard Cuckoo but Nearctic migrants were pretty thin on the ground with just a few Black-throated Blue Warblers seen.
