Bee Hummingbird, Bermejas (Zapata Peninsula) 19 March 2008.

First full day on the Zapata was a real cracker: Started at Rio Hatiguanico with corking views of
Zapata Wren (much too close to digiscope) and spent the afternoon at the Bermejas Reserve north of Playa Giron. We didn't really get much done in the forest this afternoon because of this cracking male
Bee Hummingbird just outside the reserve. The world's smallest bird is a Cuban endemic and considered vulnerable due to the devastating effect of the tropical storms and hurricanes that reap havoc throughout the island almost annually.

We watched the male
Bee Hummer for nearly two hours, often harrassed by this
Cuban Emerald as it tried to feed on nearby flowering trees. Other distractions included
Fernandina's Flicker and
Cuban Parrot.
