Hyacinth Macaw, Carajas August 2008.
Carajas is a mining town in Para and the tropical forest of the Serra dos Carajas are protected by Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) for sustainable mining.

Much of Carajas is forested and mining road access large tracks moist forest with most birding done on the Salobo or Aguas Claras roads.

Manganese, nickel, tin and iron are mined here (although there are considerable deposits of gold and copper too) and transitional forest gives way to a savanna-like habitat on rocky outcrops known as "Canga" (above). Most of our Carajas birding was in these areas with visits to the trail along the Rio Parauapebas and the forested margins of the large lake at Barragem Esteril Sul.
