BRAZIL: Hotel do Ype, Itatiaia NP.

My favourite place on Earth! Itatiaia is Brazil's oldest national park (having recently celebrated its 70th year) and a simply wonderful place to bird. The injection of Atlantic Forest birds at Itatiaia is second to no other single site as far as I am concerned and the "Wow Factor" (to quote one group member) is almost guaranteed.

Balcony Birding at the Ype 25th September 2008. Happy lot aren't they?

Saffron Toucanets, Yellow-fronted Woodpeckers, Blue-naped Chlorophonias, Chestnut-bellied Euphonias, Olive-green Tanagers and Green-headed Tanagers come to the feeders while Planalto and White-throated Woodcreepers and Pallid Spinetails forage in the trees. Slaty-breasted Wood-Rails can be seen on the approach road to the hotel below as Maroon-bellied and Plain Parakeets and Scaly-headed Parrots fly overhead.

Dusky-legged Guan.

Surucua Trogons (above) and Cliff Flycatchers frequent the chalets and in the evening just before dark Short-tailed Nighthawks feed over the canopy below the swimming pool area.

After dark Tawny-browed Owls can be heard and seen in the hotel grounds too, their "wobble-board" song resonating throughout the property.
