BRAZIL 2008: Itatiaia NP.

Saffron Toucanet, Itatiaia NP November 2008.

We stayed at the Hotel do Ype again this month. Things had changed on the bird-front, but as always it was swings and roundabouts as they say. The expected "rush" in the early morning outside the hotel didn't really materialise (unlike in September), with fewer tanagers and hummers coming to the feeders. The Tawny-browed Owls had gone missing too and stopped calling. The only one I saw was as I walked from my room to the restaurant on the first night in Itatiaia.
The trails were as good as ever though, maybe better than in September. On our first morning we had great views of Maroon-bellied Parakeets (above), Scaly-headed Parrots, Star-throated Antwrens, Ochre-rumped Antbirds, White-bibbed Antbirds, White-collared Foliage-Gleaners and White-shouldered Fire-eyes.

It was certainly wetter in the evenings and there weren't as many moths around. The Short-tailed Nighthawks didn't seem to mind though and were out hunting over the hotel at dusk.
