BRAZIL Nov 08: The Agulhas Negras Road.

You can access the treeline and elfin forest in the upper reaches of Itatiaia NP by road. And what a great day out it is - providing you get the weather. We had a couple of goes on this trip as our first day was cut short by low cloud and rain (as in September's trip). It was well worth it though.

Black & Gold Cotinga, Agulhas Negras Road, Itatiaia NP November 2008.

Black & Gold Cotinga is one of the target birds at this altitude (1700m +) and we were lucky to find one perched in the open begging to be 'scoped. Diademed Tanager in the same tree for good measure and after soaking these up we found another key Itatiaia bird in the shape of Black-capped Piprites. Red-rumped and Bay-chested Warbling-Finches, Brown-breasted Bamboo-Tyrant, Shear-tailed Grey-Tyrant and Rufous-tailed Antbird kept us amused in the drizzle on our first trip but just as we were immersing ourselves in a fabulous Large-tailed Antshrike (often tricky to see well and a bit of a skulker), the rain became heavy. Once again our attempts to reach the Araucaria trees were foiled and we had to descend to continue birding.

Our second attempt at the Agulhas Negras Road was a real success though. The Black & Gold Cotinga wasn't in the same tree but a couple of males showed well in the forest alongside the road with Golden-winged Caciques.

"Big Snail", Agulhas Negras Road, Itatiaia NP November 2008.

Serra do Mar Tyrant-Manakin, Greenish Tyrannulet, Ochre-faced Tody-Flycatcher and Black-breasted Plovercrest were all seen well on our second visit but it was the stand of Araucaria trees at around 2000m that interested us.

My effort at photographing Large-tailed Antshrike resulted in this - there will be better!

Aracauraia trees at approx. 2000m, Agulhas Negras Road, Itatiaia NP Nov 08.

We soon found the Itatiaia Thistletails (in the scrub) and the Araucaria Tit-Spinetails (in the Araucaria trees!) as well as White-crested Tyrannulet and a few glimpsed the Mouse-coloured Tapaculo that responded to tape too. Great job!
