Las Tangaras

Black-and-Gold Tanager

It's been a couple of years since I was last in the Choco of the western slopes of the Andes in Colombia. Last time it was El Cairo in April 2010 with Gold-ringed Tanager as the star bird along with many other Choco specialities that were hard or impossible to find in previous visits to the Choco of western Ecuador.
The Gold-ringed isn't as easy at Las Tangaras as it is at El Cairo (although we did see a couple) but the Black-and-Gold Tanager is a dead cert.
As well as many other spectacular species (more of those in the next post) Las Tangaras certainly lives up to its billing as a fine place to watch tanagers, one of the most spectacular of Neotropical bird groups.

Here are a few .....

Rufous-throated Tanager
Blue-winged Mountain-Tanager
Black-chinned Mountain-Tanager
