Richardson's Canada Goose, Mersehead (Dumfries & Galloway) Feb 2013.

Richardson's Canada Goose with Barnacle Geese, Mersehead RSPB 23/2/13.

We spent our usual late winter break staying at the cottages on the RSPB reserve at Mersehead on the Scottish Solway. Barnacle Geese fed right outside the kitchen window every day and on 23rd & 24th the Richardson's Canada Goose was with them or elsewhere on the reserve.

Apart from the Richardson's it was rather quiet on the reserve though with Peregrine the only raptor of note, no Twite sightings and little of interest amongst the usual wildfowl on the wetland. The glorious weather (we didn't have any rain and hardly saw a single cloud the whole time we were in D&G) prompted Yellowhammers to sing, Great Spotted Woodpeckers to drum and the overwintering Chiffchaff reminded me that Spring is not far away. I also heard a Chiffchaff in song along the Nith in nearby Dumfries.

Barnacle Geese flying to roost on the merse at the edge of the reserve.
