Great Rufous Woodcreeper in the grounds of Pouso Alegre Lodge, Pantanal.
Once again this year we enjoyed a “Classic Brazil” tour full of variety and top quality birding. We started in the Atlantic Forests at REGUA and although we had some bad luck with two of the target birds (Shrike-like Cotinga and Giant Snipe both heard but not seen – aaagh!), we did enjoy some good fortune with marvellous studies of male Pin-tailed Manakin, Black-cheeked Gnateater and Crescent-chested Puffbird. The Sumidouro and Carmo excursion was a great success too as we found many Three-toed Jacamars this year and the male Serra Antwren that started calling as we stepped out the bus was the icing on the cake.
If REGUA was a little quiet at times, then Itatiaia made up for it! Itatiaia is without doubt my favourite place in the Atlantic Forests. Yes, Intervales State Park may just have the edge (only just), but the effortless birding at Itatiaia takes some beating with Atlantic Forest endemics right outside the dining room from dawn (hummers and much more on the feeders) to dusk (Tawny-browed Owls). The tree-line is easily accessible here to and despite foul weather we saw most of the required species on the Agulhas Negras Road, although full credit must go to Eduardo and his exceptional bird-finding skills for this. John’s super effort in finding that Black-and-Gold Cotinga was well appreciated by the group on that windswept highland road I seem to remember. Black-capped Piprites, Serra do Mar Tyrannulet, Rufous-tailed Antbird, Large-tailed Antshrike and Itatiaia Spinetail were just some of the highlights here. Swallow-tailed Cotinga back outside the hotel just shows how it’s never safe to relax in Itatiaia!

Helmeted Manakin, Pantanal.
White-lored Spinetail, Pantanal.
Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Pantanal.
Hyacinth Macaw, Southern Screamer, Plumbeous Ibis, Jabiru and a bewildering mix of grassland and gallery forest birds awaited us in the Pantanal once we arrived in Mato Grosso. The Upland Sandpipers were a surprise and the boat trip along the Pixaim was lively with Giant Otters and Brazilian Tapirs almost stealing the headlines from the birds. Three Giant Anteaters is just greedy though!
Chapada’s Cerrado didn’t disappoint this year with a fresh injection of new birds once as soon as we started birding the Agua Fria Road. White-rumped and White-banded Tanagers, Rufous-winged Antshrike, Chapada Flycatcher and of course those Red-legged Seriemas were just some of the magic birds of the Cerrado that first morning.

Rusty-backed Antwren, Chapada dos Guimaraes.
Red-billed Scythebill, Pantanal.
